Why is New York City important to the advancement of the Gospel?
NYC is home to over 20 million people representing one out of every 360 people on the planet, and arguably the most influential region in human history as a center for finances (Wall Street), art (Museum Mile), media (NBC, CBS, ABC, Wall Street Journal, and New York Times), culture (Broadway), and religion (St Patrick’s Cathedral, 7100 Evangelical / Pentecostal churches, and home to five of the nine most populous Muslim counties in America).
The sheer density of Manhattan with 1.5 million people commuting Monday through Friday creates a mid-town dynamic of 250,000 people per square mile during the work week. Manhattan is arguably the most influential island in human history. More than a trillion dollars is traded from Manhattan every day. Yet, the economic disparity in New York City is one of the greatest in the world – between the super-rich and the extremely poor. From a faith perspective there is an inverse relationship between affluence and spiritual receptivity.
